Department Chair of Fire Protection Technology/Emergency Management

Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) is seeking qualified applicants with an interest in providing academic leadership, administrative oversight, and strategic direction for all programs within the Fire Protection Technology (FIP) and Emergency Management (EM) disciplines. The desired applicant is needed to modernize the existing programs in order to meet evolving workforce needs. It will be essential for the chosen applicant have an interest in growing program enrollment, knowledge of emerging hazards and technologies, and the ability to maintain alignment with industry expectations for advanced training and specialized certifications. Enrollment growth and program modernization ensures FTCC remains competitive, innovative, and responsive to the critical needs of the communities we serve.
 
The Department Chair oversees full-time and adjunct faculty, coordinates course scheduling, manages departmental resources, and supports student advising and program progression. The role includes collaboration with external regulatory bodies such as the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM), and regional public-safety organizations to maintain program relevance and certification alignment.
 
In addition to administrative responsibilities, the Department Chair will teach selected courses within the Fire Protection Technology and Emergency Management programs and is responsible for fostering a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and student success. The chair works closely with college leadership to support institutional goals, program accreditation requirements, workforce development needs, and community partnerships.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Protection Technology, Emergency Management, Public Safety, or another relevant field.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional experience in fire service, emergency management, or public safety operations
  • Have a good understanding of Canvas, Blackboard or Moodle which includes building course shells, uploading and organize content, set up quizzes, assignments, and discussion forums, and manage gradebooks.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership grounded in clear communication, sound decision-making, and the ability to manage both people and academic programs effectively. This includes guiding and mentoring faculty, ensuring programs meet regulatory and accreditation standards, and maintaining strong partnerships with fire, EMS, and emergency-management agencies.
