ABOUT the Lafayette Society: The Lafayette Society promotes awareness of the many contributions to America's freedom by the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolutionary War. We honor him for his generosity, patriotism, leadership, opposition to slavery and oppression, and support of human rights for all and we encourage these qualities in the civic character of Fayetteville, North Carolina, the first city in the United States named for him. The Lafayette Society fulfills its mission in several ways:

- We host North Carolina's official Lafayette Birthday Celebration every year on the weekend after Labor Day.

- We established the Lafayette Leadership Medal for the top graduate of the Master Leader Course (MLC) at the Non-commissioned Officers Academy at Ft. Liberty and we support leadership programs at Methodist University and the Chamber of Commerce.

- We have partnered with FSU, Methodist University, and FTCC to bring quality educational opportunities on their campuses for students and members of the community.

- We funded an endowment of over $50,000 at FSU to encourage the study of "the Age of Revolutions, Emancipation, and Civil Rights," which will support the Lafayette Lecture Series every year in February and help fund activities of the Black History Scholars Association.

- Through our long relationship with the American Friends of Lafayette, we offer a number of online lectures by professors, historians, and other recognized experts in their field.

- We raised over $125,000 in private contributions to construct a brick plaza surrounding the statue of Lafayette in Cross Creek Park downtown, transforming it into an attractive space for celebrations, recreation, and performances
